Retraining ex-racehorses

North Farm Stud has been retraining and rehabilitating ex-racehorses since 1992 and rehomed around 350 horses before HEROS was founded in 2006.

We continue to offer a retraining service and also work with the new owner to teach them how to look after the horse properly.  This would include feeding, treatment of wounds and many other aspects of keeping a racehorse following a racing career.

The extensive facilities we have here lend themselves to safely getting these horses used to their new job. Along with the years of experience we have in re-training thoroughbred, it leads to us being able to successfully rehome many ex-race horses.

Pre-training

Schooling

Expert schooling is also available for National Hunt horses to improve their jumping ability. We have expertise in the re-education of ex-racehorses to enable them to enjoy a career change. All schooling takes place in a secure and safe environment. The outdoor arena contains a state-of-the-art surface which allows for a great training facility.

Lunging

Lunging is used for fitness work before riding and pre-training by our experienced staff. We use the Pessoa training aid extensively in our rehabilitation work. This helps to build muscle and top line making the horses use themselves properly and in doing so become more supple and balanced. It is particularly useful for horses rehabilitating post op to get them using their limbs simultaneously in the correct way.
